ICE CREAM MAKER SAVED £60K PA IN EFFLUENT CHARGES
Kelly’s of Cornwall is a leading brand of Cornish ice cream. Their engineering team run a highly efficient production process but are always seeking improvement.
The problem was wastewater from manufacturing is discharged into the local sewer. High COD & TSS levels were present in the effluent. This resulted in excessive trade effluent fees. The large amounts of resulting sludge required four tankers per month for disposal. Pipework had built up significant deposits of fats and odours were creating an unpleasant local environment.
Clearwater conducted a detailed analysis of the wastewater and installed an automatic dosing unit to regularly inject the correct chemical product.
Within a few weeks Kelly’s engineers reported clean internal pipework, and that the COD & TSS levels were plummeting.
- Trade effluent charges were reduced by over 50% and tanker costs reduced by 75%, resulting in annual savings of nearly £60,000.
Maintenance engineers reported that the build-up of fats and grease within the pipework, together with the unpleasant odours, had been completely eradicated.
